Southern Arizona and Northern Sonora
high sonoran desert of Northern Sonora, Mexico

The high Sonoran desert

The Santa Cruz County Nature & Heritage Festival is based in the picturesque, historic and environmentally diverse region that includes Southern Arizona, the international border and Northern Sonora, Mexico.

In addition to the beauty and biological diversity of the Sonoran desert, there are native grasslands in Santa Cruz county, especially in the San Rafael Valley, that are part of the “Sky Islands” of grasslands, as well as forested areas in Santa Cruz County and in Northern Sonora, that host hundreds of species of birds and other animals.

The Sonoran desert itself has some 350 species of birds and 60 species of mammals, in addition to a rich assortment of more that 2000 native plant species. The desert is green and thriving after last year’s ample rains, which has led to an abundance of flora and fauna in the region.

Every year, the Nature & Heritage Festival offers opportunities to learn more about this magical part of the world, through classes, tours and presentations.

We invite you to join us for next year’s festival! If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please fill out our contact form.
